Il cucciolo d'uomo Mowgli è cresciuto con il branco di lupi di Akela e mamma Raksha, nel rispetto della legge della Giungla. Al termine della tregua dell'acqua, però, la tigre Shere Khan torna a cercarlo: lei non ha rispetto del territorio altrui e finché non avrà Mowgli tutti i lupi saranno in pericolo. Il bambino decide allora di lasciare il branco, per proteggerlo, e la pantera Bagheera, che per prima lo portò ai lupi quando era piccolissimo, s'impegna a condurlo là da dove è venuto: al villaggio degli uomini. Il viaggio per arrivare a destinazione è quello per diventare uomo, o accettarsi tale, e passa, per Mowgli, dalla conoscenza di altre specie animali (i preziosi elefanti, architetti della natura, o le ambiziose scimmie di re Louie) e dalla vita in compagnia dell'orso Baloo, goloso e giocherellone: la metà morbida della coppia genitoriale che forma con Bagheera, più ansioso e normativo, e che fa del Libro della Giungla una splendida storia di famiglia ricomposta. La Disney torna sul luogo di un suo grande classico, ancora amatissimo, e lo fa nel modo migliore, e cioè tenendo il film d'animazione come un riferimento costante, nella successione degli episodi e nella caratterizzazione dei personaggi, prevedendo piccole variazioni che non stravolgono, ma tornando allo stesso tempo anche ai racconti originali dell'inglese Kipling e, soprattutto, puntando giustamente sulla propria specificità, ovvero il live action, la coesistenza nella stessa inquadratura di un ragazzino seminudo e di bestie feroci e meravigliose, nell'ottica di un realismo immaginario che è la vera proposta del film. In questo senso, il precedente visivo di Vita di Pi anticipa ma non intacca l'impatto del film di Jon Favreau, che debutta con una sequenza estremamente fisica e dinamica (la gara di corsa di Mowgli su e giù da alberi immensi, esasperata dal 3D) per poi alternare in seguito con fluidità azione e emozione e riuscire persino nella ripresa, quasi timida, com'è proprio degli omaggi più sentiti, della canzone del classico del '67, senza farla risultare fuori tono. Nell'interesse del dialogo tra novità e riprese, dunque, sta la maggior efficacia del film, che, se sul visivo gioca di sorprese forti e di dimensioni rivedute e distorte, sul copione opera in punta di dita, rinunciando agli avvoltoi per la scena dei bufali, ritoccando l'incontro con Baloo e il personaggio di Kaa, ma sempre entro i limiti, riportandoci ogni volta, al termine della scena, ad un'immagine nota. Così procedendo, si arriva al finale, che dice la sua (rispetto al precedente Disney ma non al libro, che ha una struttura e una temporalità differenti) quando siamo infine pronti per accogliere lo scarto, e interpreta, con arguzia, un desiderio comune a tante generazioni. Il giovane Neel Sethi, protagonista di una lavorazione avventurosa e fantasiosa tanto quanto l'oggetto del racconto, fatta di set in parte reali e in parte digitali, di attori in tute mo-cap in posa da animale e di enormi burattini parlanti tutti impegnati a non lasciarlo solo nell'impresa recitativa, è il volto perfetto per questo romanzo di formazione materiale e spirituale, che si affianca al film d'animazione senza sostituirlo, replicando la formula recente e fortunata della Cenerentola di Branagh.

Mowgli is shown to be very unfamiliar with fire throughout the film. He only sees it for the very first time when Baloo shows him the man-village and he's shown to be afraid of it himself when he goes to get some for himself for the battle with Shere Khan. So knowing this, how would he know that throwing the torch into the river when face-to-face with Shere Khan would extinguish it? He couldn't possibly know that water puts out fire. <br>------------------------<br><br>After Mowgli is stung by bees, his stings completely disappear when he is walking through the woods in the next shot. <br>------------------------<br><br>After Mowgli arrives at King Louie's lair, Mowgli has new bloodied wounds on his back and chest, not to mention the bee stings. When Mowgli escapes, he runs down the stone steps, and not one wound is seen on the front of him. Later, as King Louie looks for him, Mowgli's wounds reappear. <br>------------------------<br><br>When Shere Khan pounces on Mowgli in the dead tree, his claws rip through his chest and you can see a deep cut wound, however in the next and last scene when Mowgli's mother Raksha becomes leader of the wolf pack, this wound is not seen, not even a scar, while all his other wounds are still very prominent. <br>------------------------<br><br>Several of the animals make the sounds of the wrong species. Many of the monkeys make chimp noises, one of the langurs performs a gibbon whoop, and some of Shere Khan's vocalizations are lion sounds. <br>------------------------<br><br>When Mowgli is gathering honey and orders Baloo to go to the second mark, the boatswain's chair goes up. Instead, it should have gone down because Baloo is giving Mowgli more rope. <br>------------------------<br><br>Though Baloo is referred to as a sloth bear, he much more closely resembles a Himalayan bear (a subspecies of brown bear) and as the name suggests Himalayan bears live exclusively in the Himalayas. <br>------------------------<br><br>The movie clearly depicts African-size elephants in the movie. While there are elephants in India, they tend to be rather smaller in size compared to African elephants.<br><br>Also, the wolves are not depicted accurately either as they posses dense fur compared to the real Indian wolves which, due to the heat, tend to have rather short fur. The wolves in the movie closely resemble Tibetan wolves. <br>------------------------<br><br>Some species not native to India appear, such as a peccary and red-eyed tree frog. <br>------------------------<br><br>Wolf cubs are born in spring and grow fast, being almost full-size by their first winter. In this film, months go by whilst Mowgli is away from the pack (Baloo even says that winter has come), and the cubs have not grown at all. <br>------------------------<br><br>The character Kaa is supposed to represent an Indian or Burmese python. While they are among the largest pythons in the world, the maximum size of a specimen for both species is around 21 ft (6.4 m). Kaa is clearly over that already awesome size, estimated at around 100 feet. <br>------------------------<br><br>Gigantopitecuses had been long extinct by the time this film takes place in the 1890s. <br>------------------------<br><br>Many of the animals featured in the film are oversized, for example Kaa, the wolves, and several of the monkey species. <br>------------------------<br><br>The rain forest depicted in the movie has a tropical dry and wet season. They stated in the movie there is no winter. Winter hibernation was a lie from Baloo the bear to trick Mowgli into collecting honey for him. When Bagheera shows up, he tells Mowgli there's no winter hibernation where they are. <br>------------------------<br><br>A jungle fire would actually die off quickly. The jungle is a pretty moist environment. Most the fire would have been limited to brush and dead trees. <br>------------------------<br><br>Despite being a Gigantopithecus King Louie closely resembles a male Boronean orangutan especially with the face as he has two large cheek pads. <br>------------------------<br><br>The black Panthers is not a real animal but in fact a color variation of the leopard. Begheera should have lightly colored spots. <br>------------------------<br><br>It takes Mowgli many days to journey to the man village with Bagheera and then with Baloo. However when he learns of Akela's death, at the jaws of Shere Khan, he is able to run back to the river in a few minutes. <br>------------------------<br><br>Bandar-log ("monkey-people") is incorrectly pronounced in the film. The correct pronunciation of "log" is "logue", to rhyme with "vogue". <br>------------------------<br><br>When King Louie searches for Mowgli he is seen passing Mowgli's left hand side when the man cub hides behind a pillar but when Mowgli turns to his right Louie appears out of nowhere. Given Louie's size and the timing that should be impossible. <br>------------------------<br><br>Bagheera and Louie somehow knew Akela was killed by Shere Khan, yet nobody ever told them about his demise. Louie already established that he had an extensive spy network through his monkeys, and we see birds frequently acting as messengers in the jungle. It is likely both characters learned of Akela's death via these methods. <br>------------------------<br><br>Baloo manages to save Mowgli before he is devoured by Kaa, however, later in the movie, Baloo needs Mowgli to get honey for him that is hanging from a cliff because he can't climb, yet we clearly saw that Mowgli was standing on a branch high above the ground during his encounter with Kaa. How did Baloo even manage to get up there? <br>------------------------<br><br>Due to being a Gigantopithecus King Louie possibly could had used his huge size to rule over the animals as they would likely fear him due to his size and bulk rather than use fire to rule the jungle. <br>------------------------<br><br>When the Monkey Temple collapses there is no dust present after the collapse. This is highly unlikely. <br>------------------------<br><br>
