La produzione fa sapere che si tratta "della commedia romantica che ha incassato di più nella storia del cinema USA, più di Pretty Woman, più di Notting Hill, più di Bridget Jones. In effetti il film è costruito con tutti, proprio tutti i possibili ammiccamenti al pubblico. Sai che tutto finirà bene, che tutti i nodi saranno sciolti, che tutto andrà per il meglio. Sei sempre rassicurato. Sai come si comporteranno tutti i personaggi, sai che i genitori del ragazzo, perplessi, schizzinosi all'inizio, alla fine saranno conquistati dalla pittoresca -e tanto non convenzionale da essere convenzionale- famiglia greca. Toula è bruttina, goffa, prigioniera della "grecità" della sua famiglia: il padre teorizza che tutte le parole del mondo hanno radice greca e che "esistono solo due categorie di persone: i greci e tutti quelli che vorrebbero esserlo". Quando Toula, incredibilmente attira le attenzioni di Ian, bello, alto, intelligente, benestante, non crede ai suoi occhi. Invece "lo straniero" si innamora davvero. E qui cominciano i "riti". Per farsi accettare Ian subisce tutto, a cominciare dal battesimo con rito ortodosso. Nonostante i pregiudizi iniziali di tutti, compresi i genitori "americani naturalmente", alla fine l'amor trionfa. La Vardalos (Toula) è anche sceneggiatrice. Dice di aver semplicemente raccontato la propria famiglia. Fra i produttori c'è Tom Hanks.

When Maria is telling her daughter about her life in Greece and why she left, it is obvious that the audio has been re-dubbed. <br>------------------------<br><br>When Toula's mother is talking to her on the phone while peeling potatoes, the sound of her peeling continues when she pauses for a brief moment at the beginning of the phone call. <br>------------------------<br><br>The women wear their wedding rings on the left hand - Greek Orthodox women wear wedding rings on the right hand. <br>------------------------<br><br>The Portokalos house has Corinthian columns which are said to be like those of the Parthenon. In fact, the Parthenon's columns are Doric, which are much older and simpler than the elaborate Corinthian columns. <br>------------------------<br><br>In the travel agency, Toula is on the phone telling a customer that their reservation is PNR. That is incorrect travel agent lingo - a PNR *is* the reservation itself (it stands for Passenger Name record) - she should have said your seats are confirmed. <br>------------------------<br><br>In the wedding invitation, Portokalos is spelled "Rortokalos" in the Greek section. <br>------------------------<br><br>While visiting Ian's parents, talk of a "receptionist" inexplicably turns to talk of a "secretary". <br>------------------------<br><br>When young Toula and her "friends" are in the car on their way to school, Gus' gloves disappear and reappear numerous times as he is driving. <br>------------------------<br><br>When young Toula's dad drops her and her friends off at school, and stops her to remind her she "should be proud to be Greek", the window changes position throughout the dialogue. <br>------------------------<br><br>When they are sitting on Toula's parent's couch, the plastic cover changes. One minute it is covering all of the couch, the next it is only covering the back of the couch. <br>------------------------<br><br>When Toula decides to sit at the table full of blondes at college, she places her brown bag lunch on the table then sits down. In the next shot, she picks up her lunch bag and sets it on the table in front of her again before opening it. <br>------------------------<br><br>During the proposal, Toula's hand is on her chest during close-ups of her face, but is caressing Ian's face and moves to her side when the camera is on Ian. <br>------------------------<br><br>When the bridesmaids are getting ready for the wedding, several bridesmaids are shown putting on stockings, but in a following clip, they are all shown stocking-less and painting their toenails. <br>------------------------<br><br>When Costa gives the couple their gift at the wedding, Ian's hair changes from loose and without hair product in it, to being smoothed back with gel, twice. <br>------------------------<br><br>The second time Toula opens the crumpled college brochure in the alley, she accidentally rips a corner off of it.
