Dopo aver fatto tardi in ufficio Paul ha un incontro ravvicinato, e fatale, con una creatura misteriosa che vive al buio e svanisce di fronte alla luce. La moglie Sophie, vittima di una grave forma di depressione, di conseguenza si chiude sempre più in se stessa, rafforzando il legame con la misteriosa creatura, che tratta come un'amica e chiama Diana. Intanto il piccolo Martin, figlio di Paul e Sophie, dorme con la luce accesa, per paura che Diana gli faccia del male.  Al tempo del cortometraggio, che nel 2013 è valso a David F. Sandberg una pioggia di riconoscimenti, si parlava già di una nuova promessa per il genere, tanto che James Wan - regista di The Conjuring - ha pensato subito di produrre a Sandberg un'estensione di quel corto. Considerata l'esilità dell'assunto inziale, non si può certo negare a Sandberg l'impegno profuso per fare di Lights Out un lungometraggio. Per estendere l'idea forte di un mostro che agisca al buio ma sparisca con la luce accesa (per ricomparire non appena questa viene spenta) il regista svedese ricorre ad ogni possibile stratagemma, inclusa l'illuminazione di dispositivi elettronici e fari anabbaglianti e, per quanto riguarda il buio, lo sfruttamento di ombre che si formano in angoli opposti della casa rispetto a una fonte di luce.  Il gioco del gatto e del topo tra la coraggiosa Rebecca e l'implacabile Diana si protrae così in diversi ambienti e situazioni fino alla svolta, determinata dalle indagini di Rebecca. Ossia il ritrovamento, clamorosamente troppo agevole, di testimonianze segrete sul passato di Diana: il topos sulle origini del mostro, ripreso da innumerevoli predecessori, come Nightmare o Venerdì 13.  Narrativamente e concettualmente esilissimo, a salvare Lights Out è solo il lato tecnico, che regge a sufficienza per rendere palpitanti alcune sequenze di lotta tra Diana e i figli di Sophie. Meglio soprassedere invece sul sottotesto psicoanalatico, che guarda a Babadook ma trova solo semplificazioni di inquietante grossolanità.

At the very end when Bret comes back with the cops. The LAPD car is in front of Bret's Volvo SUV. The cop car is a crown Victoria and has the number 22 on the trunk.A few minutes later after the finale when they're sitting in the ambulance another cop car pulls up behind Bret's SUV and it's a LAPD charger and also has the number 22 on the trunk. <br>------------------------<br><br>When Rebecca and Martin are in the kitchen Rebecca places a milk jug on the table, milk instantly appears in a glass and the amount is constantly changing through the entire scene. <br>------------------------<br><br>Diana's shadow form appears to be naked, but when we see her body under the UV light, she's always wearing a dress. <br>------------------------<br><br>When Rebecca is brushing back Martin's hair, the style of the hair, mainly the fringe, changes throughout the process. <br>------------------------<br><br>When the social worker is talking to Rebecca, she asks if Martin is her brother. Rebecca responds that they are step-siblings. This is factually untrue since we learn later on in the movie that they both have the same mother. Therefore, they are half-siblings, not step-siblings. <br>------------------------<br><br>
