Il film Disney racconta l'eroica impresa della Guardia Costiera americana alle prese con una violenta tempesta e con uno dei più disastrosi naufragi di tutti i tempi avvenuto al largo della East Coast. Il 18 febbraio 1952, una terribile tempesta colpisce il New England, devastando intere città della costa orientale e devastando le imbarcazioni che sfortunatamente si trovano nella sua traiettoria. Fra queste, la SS Pendleton, una petroliera T-2 diretta a Boston, viene letteralmente spezzata in due: i 30 marinai intrappolati a poppa sono destinati a un rapido naufragio. Il primo ufficiale di bordo Ray Sybert (Casey Affleck) si rende conto di dover far fronte all'emergenza: esorta gli uomini a mettere da parte le loro divergenze e a collaborare per riuscire a superare una delle peggiori tempeste che si siano mai abbattute sull'East Coast. Nel frattempo, la notizia del disastro raggiunge la Guardia Costiera di Chatham, nel Massachusetts. Il Sergente Maggiore Daniel Cluff (Eric Bana) dà ordine di effettuare una rischiosa operazione per mettere in salvo i naufraghi: quattro uomini guidati dal Capitano Bernie Webber (Chris Pine), si imbarcano su una scialuppa di salvataggio dal motore difettoso, quasi sprovvisti di reali mezzi di navigazione, contro onde di 18 metri, venti sferzanti e temperature glaciali.

After Miriam arrives at the Station and has been there arguing about Webber, when she leaves, her windshield is still clear even though it's been snowing. <br>------------------------<br><br>When drubbing to the port, Pine' s character is wearing gloves that clearly have U.S.N. printed on them. When they go back to his hands, he is still wearing gloves, but no longer have U.S.N. on them. <br>------------------------<br><br>In the location credits, the town of Cohasset is misspelled as "Cohassett." <br>------------------------<br><br>The SS Pendleton was powered by a steam turbine through a reduction gear to the propeller shaft. She would not have had "Engine Air Intakes". The concerns should have been to keep the rising waters in the engine room from reaching the boilers, not the non existent "Air Intakes" <br>------------------------<br><br>The Coast Guard doesn't allow people to wear hats in their mess areas; however, nobody says anything to the fishermen who are doing so. <br>------------------------<br><br>Once the bow of the Pendleton split from the stern, the lights in this section should have gone out instantly. In the film they remain on until the bow sinks. <br>------------------------<br><br>When Miriam goes to the house after her car gets stuck in the snowbank, she switches on a radio that comes on instantly. Radios in those days - because they had tubes - took several seconds to warm up. <br>------------------------<br><br>The engine room was not that of a T-2 tanker. T-2 tankers were turbo electric drive which means a steam turbine drives a generator which powers a 6000 hp electric synchronous AC motor. T-2 propulsion is controlled by levers which connect the motor to the generator and control the speed of the generator. If the seawater rose to the level shown in the movie, there would be no propulsion possible because all the necessary pumps and the main motor were located in the lower engine room and would have been submerged. Flooding of the boilers themselves would not have been an issue but the fuel pumps would also have been submerged. <br>------------------------<br><br>When Webber and his crew go out to save the others, they reach massive waves and wind that throw the boat around like it's in a washing machine. Everybody is on deck, not strapped in or protected in anyway yet were not thrown overboard, injured, and remained right where they were. The impact would have been much worse than a major car crash on a speedway in a convertible without seat belts - that wouldn't have helped anyway - but they were fine. <br>------------------------<br><br>A Chief Petty Officer would be addressed as "Chief", not "Sir". <br>------------------------<br><br>With all the at sea inaccuracies mentioned it must also be stated that it was also snowing, freezing temps, extreme winds, a blizzard, and nobody dressed appropriately in the middle of the frigid ocean in a small boat.Also there is no way they could have heard each other talking, in these conditions, without headphones. <br>------------------------<br><br>In the first scene while driving down the street (in 1951), there is a white late model car in the driveway of a house on the left side of the street. Looks like a 2000ish Nissan Altima. <br>------------------------<br><br>When the crew of the Pendleton meet shortly after the ship splits, there is a calendar on the wall for February 1952 which only shows 28 days. 1952 was a leap year, so that calendar page should have showed 29 days. <br>------------------------<br><br>Neither half of the Pendleton sank, although both are shown doing so in the film. Both the bow and stern sections were left grounded on shoals by the storm, from where they were eventually retrieved and scrapped. <br>------------------------<br><br>When Webber and Miriam enter the dance in the beginning of the film the song Vaya con Dios is sung. In the movie the date says February 1952. Vaya con Dios was first recorded in December 1952. <br>------------------------<br><br>When Miriam was driving to the station she was shown passing a utility pole that had a cable TV line attached to it which was obviously not possible for that year. <br>------------------------<br><br>Despite supposed bitter cold temperatures, no condensation is seen from the mouths of any characters who are speaking outdoors. <br>------------------------<br><br>At the end, when all the men were climbing up the ladder to climb onto the pier from the boat, all their clothes were dry. <br>------------------------<br><br>
