All'età di 8 anni, John Bennett è un bambino solo e impopolare, il cui unico amico è un orsetto di peluche. Tale è la forza con la quale John desidera che Ted possa parlare, che la sua speranza si avvera e l'orso prende vita. Trent'anni dopo, i due sono ancora migliori amici, fan scatenati di Flash Gordon e coinquilini dediti ad alcol e fumo da mane a sera. Uno stile di vita, questo, che rischia però di mettere seriamente a repentaglio la relazione sentimentale che John ha intrapreso da qualche anno con Lori. La ragazza, esasperata, arriva dunque a porgli il terribile ultimatum: crescere, abbandonando l'orsetto al suo destino, o rinunciare per sempre a lei. Il creatore dei Griffin trasferisce il suo umorismo irriverente dalla tv al cinema, dalla formula seriale a quella unitaria (anche se di questi tempi non è mai detto e probabilmente il sequel è già alle porte), senza per questo annacquare l'inchiostro: nulla sfugge alla sua ironia, né gli ebrei né l'11 settembre, non c'è tabù che regga. L'orsetto di peluche prende il posto della famigliola animata e gioca lo stesso gioco, ovvero sfruttare l'apparenza innocua e infantile per rendere ancora più speziate le cattiverie e il turpiloquio. Nonostante alcune siano più riuscite ed altre meno, sarebbe stupido e impossibile non ammettere che Ted è imbottito di scene esilaranti. Siano quelle a sfondo sessuale o quelle che coinvolgono Sam Jones alias Flash, ce ne sono per tutti i gusti: gratuite, fastidiose, facili, perverse o irresistibili. Sul versante del racconto-contenitore il film non ha invece la stessa carica inventiva e si appoggia alla classica favoletta di fantasia del desiderio magicamente esaudito (e la seconda volta è davvero poco credibile) e del bambinone che non ha voglia di crescere (un po' come nel recente film dei Muppet con Jason Segel). Si obietterà che non è questo il punto, che la commedia è nella polpa e il resto è pura spina dorsale, però la sensazione che Seth MacFarlane potesse fare qualche metro in più, nella sua operazione di deragliamento, da qualche parte rimane. Funziona certamente il buddy movie della strana coppia resa ancora più strana dall'appartenenza di uno dei due membri ad un altro mondo, e fa ridere e riflettere il finale, nel quale, ipotizzando un futuro per alcuni personaggi, il film ci ricorda che di stranezze ce ne sono già parecchie in giro, ma le prendiamo per buone, ne facciamo addirittura delle star. E allora perché non un orsetto di peluche?

The camera switches to show Ted running by the door, and suddenly Donny is dancing with his hands on his hips, and there's no glass of soda to be seen.<br><br>--------<br>During John and Lori's anniversary dinner at the restaurant, the level of champagne in John's glass rises and falls, without it being filled or sipped from.<br><br>--------<br>When John is sitting in his hotel room, Ted comes to the sliding door and it is pouring outside. Very shortly thereafter, they go to the Hatch Shell for the Nora Jones concert where it is not raining and has clearly not been raining.<br><br>--------<br>As Lori is driving, she is carrying on a conversation with John, but the passenger window is clearly rolled up (reflections are visible). When he opens the car door in the reverse shot, it is rolled down.<br><br>--------<br>When Ted calls John to convince him to come to his party John is seen holding his phone upside down. When it cuts to him again later he is then seen holding his phone the right way.<br><br>--------<br>When Sam Jones pours shots for the guys John's is seen full and when they go to drink the shots his is almost empty.<br><br>--------<br>When John goes to Ted's party with Flash Gordon, they are all given shots the glasses are all full. It's a different store name than what is on the cashiers' name tags as well.<br><br>--------<br>When John and Lori arrive at Donny's house in Chelsea to rescue Ted, they are driving the wrong way on Chestnut Street (a one-way street).
