Quando Osiride, dio che vigila sul popolo del Nilo, decide di lasciare il regno nelle mani del figlio Horus, il fratello Set usurpa il trono con la forza, uccidendo il padre e accecando il legittimo erede. Sfuggendo al crudele dominio di Set, un mortale, il ladro Bek, cerca la prigione di Horus per liberare il dio e liberare così la sua amata e il popolo d'Egitto.  Purtroppo a volte le scommesse quasi certe, quei pronostici così blindati che è quasi piacevole veder smontati, si rivelano drammaticamente azzeccate. Sul successo di Gods of Egypt, man mano che si avvicinava la data di uscita del film, non puntava più nessuno. In primis la Lionsgate, che ha drasticamente rallentato la campagna mediatica dopo le previsioni funeste sugli incassi del primo weekend e dopo che l'unico motivo di attenzione intorno al film è risultato il linciaggio di Twitter in nome del cosiddetto "whitewashing". Già dai primi lanci pubblicitari è infatti balzato all'occhio come carnagione e accento del cast, e di Gerard Butler e Nikolaj Coster-Waldau in particolare, si allontanassero da quanto atteso per degli antichi Egizi: e la giustificazione secondo cui si tratta di divinità e non di semplici umani suona se possibile ancor più razzista e insostenibile. Ma è lo spirito con cui è stata concepita l'intera operazione Gods of Egypt ad essere caratterizzato da questa spregiudicatezza: nessun legame con l'effettiva mitologia egizia, nessuna volontà di nascondere il ridicolo dietro a ogni inquadratura sovraccarica di cgi o a una scenografia al di là del kitsch. Fino a concepire il dio Ra con le fattezze di Geoffrey Rush, su una sorta di astronave e perennemente intento a sfidare un demone nero che vuole divorare il mondo. Il problema è che il fatto di non prendersi (troppo) sul serio non è sufficiente a giustificare la presenza in sala di un blockbuster mancato, destinato a non avere un pubblico. Chi cerca il fantasy stile Trono di spade è troppo esigente in tema di personaggi iconici e intrighi che sfruttino la magia, mentre chi ama il peplum contemporaneo, figlio della sbornia di 300, si alzerà dalla sedia alla prima e goffa trasformazione degli Dei in creature tra il robotico e l'animalesco. La qualità della post-produzione è così scarsa da rendere indistinguibili (o semplicemente indistinti?) molti dettagli di computer graphics, specie considerato un budget di 140 milioni di dollari, sfruttato malissimo. Non essendo neanche spinto dalla necessità o dall'interesse economico che accompagnano spesso un adattamento o un remake, resta da capire a cosa mirasse Gods of Egypt, visto che manca l'iconoclastia della parodia e l'elemento comico del film è totalmente involontario. Per Alex Proyas, legato in passato a opere di culto dei Novanta come Il corvo o Dark City, uno scivolone quasi irrimediabile, con un'opera il cui ricordo imperituro è relegato agli annali del trash, tra un Ed Wood e un Mystery Science Theater 3000.

Three pyramids were seen in the first landscape shot. However Osiris was supposed to be the first mythological pharaoh of Egypt. Moreover, the first pharaoh to have a perfectly shaped triangle for a pyramid was Sneferus, whose reign was estimated to be from around 2613 BC to 2589 BC, or the Fourth Age of the Old Kingdom. <br>------------------------<br><br>Characters use a telescope, which was technology unknown until the Renaissance. Furthermore, if both lenses are convex, which they appear to be, it's a Newtonian telescope and should have produced an inverted image. <br>------------------------<br><br>After Hathor and Horus get out of Set's pyramid, Hathor puts her left hand to the side of Horus's head. When the camera is looking at her two of her fingers are on Horus's ear. But when the camera is looking at Horus, all of her fingers are below his ear. This happens repeatedly during this scene. <br>------------------------<br><br>When Horus,Hathor and Bek are walking in the swamp, the water level comes to just under the knees for all three. Since Horus and Hathor are bigger, if the water level is below their knees it should be at least waist-level for Bek, but it comes to just under his knees as well. <br>------------------------<br><br>When Horus, Hathor and Bek are walking in the swamp, Hathor throws her flask to Bek to get her fresh water but the flask gets smaller when it is in the air and in Bek's hands - then when he tosses it back, it gets larger again. Of course, it should be about twice the size when Bek has it and smaller when Hathor has it. <br>------------------------<br><br>When Horus, Hathor and Bek are walking in the red desert, Hathor's left earring has only one item dangling from it and two on the one in her right ear. Later she has two items dangling from both. <br>------------------------<br><br>Ordinary humans are described as "mortals" to distinguish them from the gods. But Set kills Osiris in the opening scene and is described as having killed other gods who resisted him, so the gods are also mortal. <br>------------------------<br><br>During the battle between Horus (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) and Set's minions (Gerard Butler) battle Horus breaks off both horns but in the next shot you can easily see only one horn is broken off. <br>------------------------<br><br>In Thoth's Library where Horus assaults Thoth (Chadwick Boseman), all of the Thoth's doppelgangers draw their swords with their left hand. For some reason, the editor chose to then flip the video to show Chadwick Boseman holding the sword in his right hand for the next cut. However, all of the doppelgangers are holding their sword in the left hand in all of the remaining shots. You can also follow how the fern (along with everything else) jumps from left to right and back again on the table in this scene. <br>------------------------<br><br>
